Women Cantors Network

Jewish clergy organization

The Women Cantors Network is a Jewish clergy organization that operates internationally, focusing on music and supporting female cantors. Founded in 1982 by Cantor Deborah Katchko-Zimmerman, the group aims to promote the recognition and employment of qualified female cantors nationwide. Cantor Katchko-Zimmerman's background in music was influenced by her family, as she is the granddaughter of a prominent cantor and was privately trained by her father, who was also a cantor.

Since its inception, the Women Cantors Network has grown and developed its activities. Initially, the first meeting drew only twelve attendees, but the organization has expanded its reach over time. Key milestones include the launch of a regular newspaper publication in 1983, the establishment of a constitution and bylaws in 1993, and the commissioning of new Jewish music in 1997. The group also created an online list-serve network in 1998, further facilitating communication and outreach among its members. Through these efforts, the Women Cantors Network continues to advocate for and support female cantors in their careers.
