Sidney Shapiro

American-born Chinese translator (1915–2014)

Sidney Shapiro was a multifaceted individual who spent the majority of his life in China, having relocated there in 1947. Born in the United States in 1915, he went on to pursue a career in the film industry, although his contributions extended beyond acting to include translation and writing. Shapiro's decision to settle in China marked the beginning of a long and enduring relationship with the country, during which he became deeply integrated into Chinese society.

Over the course of more than five decades, Shapiro established himself as a respected figure in Beijing, where he resided for over 50 years. His dedication to China was recognized through his appointment as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Furthermore, he was one of the select few individuals to have been granted naturalized citizenship of the People's Republic of China, a testament to his commitment to the country and its people. Shapiro passed away in 2014, at the age of 99, leaving behind a legacy that reflected his unique blend of American origins and Chinese heritage.
