Robert Emden

Swiss Astrophysicist and Meteorologist (1862–1940)

Jacob Robert Emden was a renowned Swiss astrophysicist and meteorologist, born in 1862. His work had a significant impact on the field of astronomy, particularly in the study of stellar objects. Emden's research focused on the application of mechanical heat theory to cosmological and meteorological problems, demonstrating his expertise in multiple areas of science.

Emden's most notable contribution to the field of astronomy is his book, Gaskugeln, published in 1907. This seminal work presents a mathematical model that describes the behavior of polytropic gaseous stellar objects under the influence of their own gravity. The model, now known as the Lane-Emden equation, has become a fundamental concept in astrophysics. Emden passed away in 1940, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the understanding of celestial phenomena.
