Hal Shaper

South African musician (1931–2004)

Hal Shaper was a South African musician born in 1931. He initially pursued a career in law, qualifying as a lawyer in 1955, before transitioning to music. This marked the beginning of a five-decade-long career in the music industry, during which he collaborated with renowned artists. Shaper's work as a songwriter led to associations with notable figures such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, and David Bowie.

Shaper's success in the music industry was cemented with the release of his first hit, Softly, As I Leave You, which provided him with financial stability. He subsequently established his own music publishing company, Sparta Florida Inc. In addition to writing song titles and lyrics, Shaper also explored other creative avenues, including writing for films and musicals. His diverse contributions to the music industry and beyond left a lasting impact, until his passing in 2004.
