Amnon of Mainz

Amnon of Mainz was a Jewish figure from 11th century Germany, specifically from the city of Mainz, also known as Mayence. He is the central figure in a medieval legend that gained significant popularity. According to this legend, Amnon was a rabbi who caught the attention of the Archbishop of Mainz, who attempted to convert him to Christianity on multiple occasions.

The legend recounts Amnon's unwavering dedication to his Jewish faith, despite the archbishop's persistent efforts to convert him. When Amnon appeared to waver in his commitment, he was overcome with regret and subsequently punished for his perceived betrayal. The archbishop ultimately sentenced Amnon to a severe punishment, which included the amputation of his hands and feet, rather than the self-imposed penalty Amnon had suggested. This medieval legend has endured, making Amnon of Mainz a notable figure in Jewish history and folklore.
